United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

about the Over the Border Festival

Music touches every corner of the world and with music there are people. Over the Border Festival presents the worlds musicians and their messages to you in Bonn, This collection of musicians act as a plea of the people struggling to protect natural resources and their own livelihood's. Many people around the world are forced to leave their homes and migrate looking for a better future anywhere else due to environmental challenges.

Most of these challenges are directly related to desertification and climate change which constantly diminish their resources and render their livelihood useless. The power of music brings people together and will spread the voices of the most vulnerable populations of the world.

Over the Border

Information

More than just a music festival – Over the Border Festival will have a second round.

After its debut in February of this year, Over the Border Festival will have a sequel in March.

The success of the 2016 Festival gave us the strong feeling that the people in this international city of Bonn and its region would happily welcome another cross-border, culture-bridging music festival.

The Festival was created to give musicians from all over the world a chance to perform here, in the United Nations City of Bonn. And our cooperation partners have encouraged us to continue the Festival with an even broader program.

With and beyond the music we send out a message that music is a way of expressing feelings, of finding conversation topics and communicating with each other. City of Bonn offers a special place for this to happen, with its history and international significance. A United Nations city with so many non-governmental and developmental organizations, Bonn provides a proximity of ideas, knowledge and enthusiasm for the “one world”.

Over the Border Festival presents a framework for the exchange of ideas and the encounters of people to happen.
The series of musical performances in 2017 aim to show musicians who cross musical borders by using the stylistics of their respective homelands in a broader context: artists who combine their musical tradition with today’s reality.

Changes from 2016:
We begin the Festival one month later than last year. Performances will not take place daily, but with a few days apart from each other. In comparison to 2016, additional venues are the Beethovenhaus for the opening night and the Pantheon. Telekom has made it possible for the Festival to take place in the Telekom Forum on two consecutive days. In addition to the great cooperation with the City, in 2017 we present a special UNO partnership, in particular with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, which kindly accommodates our press conference.

Akua Naru

Harmonie Bonn

Location: Harmonie Bonn
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

Akua Naru, the First Lady of Global Hip Hop returns in 2017 with a Germany tour! After having given around 40 concerts in Germany only in 2016, she comes back in March of 2017 with the first insights into her new, unreleased songs.

With her music, Akoua brings back the almost forgotten female conscious-rap which stems from the Germany city of Cologne. Along with African rhythms and sounds, influences from jazz, blues and soul, Akua Narus’ expressive voice produces a luring sound, which one might compare with rap-poetess Lauryn Hill or Bahamadia.

Akoua Naru was born in the US as the eldest daughter of a bank cashier/clerk and a hospital laundry worker. At the age of seven, her father left the family. This loss led Akoua to start writing and to spend a lot of time in the church. Her grandmother was the head of the children’s worship service and her aunt led the church community choir. This experience exposed Akua not only to the African traditions of oratorios and spiritual music, but also to a world led by female energy, resistance and leadership.

Her uncle, a hip hop enthusiast, was the first to encourage her to recite her own poetry in the style of the oratorios of her pastor and in the rhythm of the instruments. What began as a game at the tender age of eight turned into Akua’s first Rap.

During college in Camden, New Jersey, Akua engaged in Urban Studies and the question of discrimination of people of different skin color and the geographical and economic factors leading to the destruction of whole communities, as she had witnessed in her own childhood. Camden, New Jersey, was regarded as the most dangerous city in the US due to its high murder and crime rate.

Having witnessed many violent crimes led Akua to leave the US. On a journey of two years, she gave musical performances throughout Southeast Asia and China, before she finally made a stop in Germany.

Akua Naru has shared the stage with artists such as Patrice, Tete, Ursula Rucker, Blitz the Ambassador, Elzhi, Wax Taylor, the English rapper TY, Mic Donet and the German power producer JR & Ph 7. Furthermore, she has done feature work with Tuneyards and the legendary Angelique Kidjo, as well as Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the drummer and head of the Roots.

With her band, Akura has already played on the stages across the world India, Romania, Nigeria, USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, France, La Reunion, Guadeloupe, Cape Verde, Portugal, Georgia, Jordan and Senegal - are just a few countries to name.

Mali Blues - the film

25.-29.02.2016 | BONN
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

More than just a music festival
21 March is since 1966 the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. A good opportunity to bring “Mali Blues” to the screen as a run-up to this year’s Over the Border Music Diversity Festival.

In cooperation with the Willi Eichler Academy e.V. (Cologne), Over the Border shows not only the impressive film about the unifying power of music, but also brings people together in the light of this topic – the main actor, a Mali native Fatoumata Diawara, is threatened by Islamists in her own country. After the viewing, there will be a discussion with the director and the representatives of the UNCCD, DAAD, WDR and other guests.

Opening with Fatoumata Diawara

Kammermusiksaal from the Beethovenhaus Bonn

Location: Kammermusiksaal des Beethovenhaus Bonn
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

Coming from Mali’s diverse movie and theatre scene, songwriter Famoura Diawara is Mali’s newest shooting star. With her guitar and African accesories, her looks resemble a mix of Miriam Makeba and Carla Bruni. Famouta Diawara is represented by the renown World Circuit label, famous for the release of Buena Vista Social Club.

Her biggest breakthrough Fatoumata Diawara had in 2013, at the age of 30, when she brought forty musicians of her home country for a joint performance. With stars such as Amadou and Mariam, Toumani Dabaté and Oumou Sangaré, she sang the peace hymne “Mali-ko”. “Mali-ko” became a call for peace, unity and diversity of Mali at the time when the French invasion pushed back the advance of radical Islamist militia in the north of the country.

As one of the protagonists of the film “Mali Blues”, Fatoumata takes us on a musical journey through the heart of Mali, where in the north of the country the jihadists destroy instruments and prohibit music by calling it a sin.

Quadro Nuevo meets Cairo Steps

Telekom Forum

& very special guests
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

At this year’s Over the Border Festival, Quadro Nuevo presents their new project Flying Carpet by inviting 15 musicians on the Telekom Forum stage.

Over the borders of time, politics and religion – a musical flying carpet takes us on an inspiring and exotic experience of sound.

Two prestigious award winning bands, Quadro Nuevo and Cairo Steps, bring together a mixture of classical Arabic music, Tango Oriental, hypnotic grooves, jazz and improvisation.

Invited stage guests include musicians from Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean countries, making the concert even more unique.

The project Flying Carpet produces meditative sounds and strong unison passages, flying between the east and west winds, taking us away from everyday trivial problems. The sound takes us over new musical landscapes, borders, cultures and ideologies. Over the trenches of seemingly unsolvable conflicts.

About their concerts they say:
“Although we come from different cultures, we stand on the stage together as friends with full respect for each other. We have the vision to create moments in our music which bridge the Occident and the Orient. A joint ride on the flying carpet!”

Saturday 25.03.2017 - Band 1

Bukahara

Telekom Forum

Location: Telekom Forum

Powered by:

Entry: 18:00 o'clock | Start: 19:30 o'clock

The summit of the two of the most exciting live bands north and south of the Weisswurst equator.

Both bands present a brand new album with a blend of multicultural and local rhythms. This is the joint performance of Bukahara and LaBrassBanda.

Bukahara – somewhere between gypsy, reggae and Balkan sounds. It is the secret mixture that makes Bukahara so special. And it is with great love and acoustic skill that the musicians prove that swing, folk, reggae and Arabic-Balkan sounds do not have to contradict.

The fan base of this grandiose band has been growing for years. The last concert in Cologne attracted over a thousand audience members. At the Over the Border Festival they present their new album for the first time in the region.

LaBrassBanda – in 2007 they were a classic insider tip. In Bavarian Chiemgau this incredible band mixed Bavarian folk with Ska Punk, Techno, Reggae and Brass. Barefoot on the stage, the band would give its audience a shock of energy and an unforgettable experience.

“We came from the music college and wanted to get out of the concert halls and into the clubs and play in front of young people”, the band founder Stefan Dettl recalls. “It was a lot more fun!” La BrassBanda started filling concert halls, playing at international festivals and making it into the top 3 in the charts. In 2017 they present their 10-year anniversary repertoire.

In 2017 they present their 10-year anniversary repertoire.

In the ten years leading to today’s momentum, LaBrassBanda has experienced quite a bit – a tour on old NSU mopeds and a tractor through Austria during the 2008 European Football Championships, ending on the stage at the finals in Vienna. Concerts in Russia, Zimbabwe and England as well as in the legendary Whisky A GoGo in Los Angeles. Performing in festivals from Southside to Chiemsee Summer to Sziget. The legendary Roskilde Festival in 2009, one highlight out of many. In 2013 they won the second place at the preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest and released three studio albums: (Hadebieehre, Übersee and Europa), one live CD (Live Olympiahalle München), a not so typical live CD (Kiah Royal) recorded in a cowshed, and a Dub CD (Europa in Dub).

What is to be expected at the ten-year anniversary of LaBrassBanda? The answer: Quite a lot! Release of the new album Around The World on 3 March 2017, followed by a big release show in Munich’s Olympic Hall, which was sold out for LaBrassBanda’s exuberating performance in 2011. World tour of about 70 shows is in planning. Stefan Dettl can hardly wait for it: “As a Rock’n’Roll-Live musician I am always looking forward to the next tour. We will celebrate it as if it’s the last. But no worries, as long as we can stand, we will be making music!”

The band:
Stefan Dettl: Vocals, Trumpet
Manuel Winbeck: Trombone
Manuel Da Coll: Drums
Fabian Jungreithmayr: Bass
Stefan Huber: Tuba
Jörg Hartl: Trumpet
Korbinian Weber: Trumpet

LA CARAVANE PASSE

Harmonie

Location: Harmonie Bonn
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

La Caravane Passe is a five-man band from Paris, mixing the music of the Balkans with hip hop, reggae, tarantella, chanson and rock, while at the same time delivering danceable circus-like aesthetics.

Toma Feterman, a former French punk with Polish, Jewish-Romanian grandparents, set the caravan in motion in 2001. A polyglot with knowledge of French, English, Spanish, Serbian, some Romanian and Romani, bits of German, Feterman writes extraordinary lyrics, which he sings and accompanies on multiple instruments - guitar, banjo and trumpet. When looking for musical accomplices for his next project, he seeks for more than just a band. He has a vision of an acoustic machinery for his Babylonian language.

An important companion of Feterman’s is Olivier Llugany, whose specialty is the fiscorn, a traditional, bass horn form Catalonia, which sounds like the Balkan tuba. Behind the drums is the ex-rugby player Pat Gigon. Cyril “Zinzin” Moret plays two saxophones simultaneously. And a man with North African roots, Ben Body, is on the bass.

La Caravane Passe belongs to one of the cult bands of the Paris music scene, owning a very loyal and devoted community. At the Over the Border Festival, La Caravane Passe presents their new album Canis Carmina – a co-operation with musicians such as Rachid Taha, Marko Markovic and many others. It is music across the borders, carrying the sound of a turning point in history.

Iiro Rantala

Pauluskirche

Location: Pauluskirche Bonn
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

Iiro Rantala is a natural phenomenon on the keyboard and a musical all-connoisseur. As the New York jazz pianist and composer Gil Goldstein praises, “Iiro Rantala is a pianistic sensation and the strongest reason for me to believe in reincarnation – his technique and musical feeling come from such depths that were possibly not created in one life only.

Up until now, the name Rantala has mainly been associated with the wild, funny and visionary jazz piano Trio Töykeät in the international jazz scene.

Rantala made his debut with Lost Heroes in 2011. On this solo piano album, the Finnish musician pays tribute to the musical heroes from Jean Sibelius to Esbjörn Svensson to Luciano Pavarotti with his own compositions. In doing so, he avoids the sentimental gestures of adoration and maintains his own authenticity: one of the most sovereign pianists of the Scandinavian jazz.

In his latest album “My Working Class Hero” Rantala presents his grandiose interpretations of John Lennon.

La Nuit D'Afrique - AWA-LY

Pantheon Bonn

Location: Pantheon Bonn
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

On this special evening of African music, Over the Border presents two contemporary African artists, regarded as the new female protagonists of the African music scene.

The Senegalese artist Awa-Ly enchants us with her new album “Five and Feather” while the Franco-Malian singer Inna Modja presents her new work “Motel Bamako”.

Awa-Ly captivates with her special musical mix and her phenomenal stage presence. The single release “Let you Down” is already a record-breaking hit in France!

Inna Modja is not only a model and an actress. She is one of Mali’s most contemporary voices and songwriters. The 21-year-old African musician is a very dedicated artist, fighting for women’s rights and against female genital mutilation. Inna Modja held a speech about this painful topic in February in front of the United Nations, telling her own story of being circumcised at the age of five, against her parents’ will. “I still suffer from it. I will always suffer from it. But I have been physically restored and feel whole as a woman. However this vulnerable fact will never go away”. Despite the dramatic past, Inna Modja looks optimistically into the future of Africa.
