Information

Diversity Returns – Das „Over-the-border“-Festival 2018
From 9 March until 25 March 2018, for the third time around, OVER THE BORDER Festival off ers musicians from around the globe a stage to present their music and their culture. The Festival aims to initiate inspiring and controversial dialogues and to promote exchange and encounters across all borders.

We are pleased to have the University of Bonn as the opening venue for the Festival this year. This renowned institution of higher education in our city, and the Brotfabrik, another new venue, are the absolute assets to the Festival.

This year, Bonn may look forward to eleven (instead of last year’s eight) events and a higher number (18 instead of 14) visiting musical artists from around the globe. With a longer time span and more concerts, we want to give more people a chance to visit and enjoy OVER THE BORDER Festival. As each year, there is a limited contingent of Festival tickets: the Festival ticket is valid for every event, is transferrable, at a cost of 125,– Euros.

We would like to thank Mrs Monique Barbut, Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, and Mr Ashok Sridharan, Mayor of the City of Bonn, for their patronage since the beginning of the Festival. Thank you for your trust! We look forward to the continuation of the OVER THE BORDER Festival 2018.

OTB 2018

Short Interviews

Dirk Wende - Pressesprecher Deutsche Telekom

Wolfgang Koll - Harmonie Bonn

Malte Boecker - Direktor Beethovenhaus

Manuela Erdmann - Peter Wild Immobilien

Harald Kirsch - Pantheon Theater

47 Soul - Band
(1) Any border that has been forced against the will of the majority of the people , and more significantly borders that are not even yet defined such in the case of our palestinian people who still suffering from israeli occupation of our land.

(2) Always and always seeing how people move and interact to our Sham Music and meeting other artists and listeners with similar hopes and dreams

(1) For us, OTB means there is no border in Music and Art , The 3MA projet, that is composed of 3 artists from 3 different cultures and countries, shows that.

Because we are coming from 3 african countries (mali, Maroc, Madagascar), OTB is even more significant as a dream of being able to travel all over the world with no visas and no trouble, unfortuntaly this is a dream and the reality is going totally on the contrary of this dream !

BSMG - Band

Lee Bass (Gato Preto) - Band

Debashish Bhattacharya - Band
(1) Border i look at is the border of musical ignorance and musical knowledge. Border of Professional insecurity in Artistes and freedom of artistic creation.

(2) Looking forward of musical creative fun on stage.

H.J. Over - Kulturamt

09.03.2018 | BONN
Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

ÄL JAWALA - HYPNOPHONIC TOUR
Oriental Brass & Big Beats

Äl Jawala are one of the pioneers of the global beats scene. In the early 2000s, they were among the first to combine urban beats with wild oriental wind instruments. On countless drums and two saxophones, they sparked the fire of a whole Gypsy Brass Band and carried this new sound, first as street musicians, into the astonished ears of their listeners. By now, Äl Jawala have been rocking the concert halls from the Atlantic to the Black Sea, assembling an ever growing fan base.

Sometimes urban and club-oriented, sometimes mysterious, dark and with a big dose of rock ’n’ roll attitude, Äl Jawala deliver a unique blend of party and concert experience. Easy to dance to, loud and unrestrained, without losing musical depth and richness of diversity.

TRETTMANN

After three highly praised EPs with KitschKrieg, a collab EP with Megaloh, support tours and music with Bonez MC & RAF Camora and the beginners, Trettmann now goes on a tour with a new album. Turn Up with the Based Adriano, Soundsystem Energie with the prototype of the German Trap singer, in 2016 Trettmann marched through the German music scene like a hungry newcomer, and his Gang KitschKrieg is known by all. Previously, Trettmann has been composing dancehall music in Saxon, today he is the proof that German rap has grown up.

Instead of gangster gestures, Trettmann’s new “#DYI” Album has gestures of warmth and a touch of the Caribbean.

»... With fiddle, accordion, bass and the occasional programmatic use of drum-sampling, the essence of ancient Jewish music is extracted precisely and yet with tremendous depth of emotion. So intense, as if you were watching an open heart of a Klezmer beating.« - Rolling Stone

»The Sounds of a Vanishing World” is the last, with the annual prize of the German record critics recognized CD by Kroke. However, one will not associate this music with a “vanishing world”, but with the preservation of a great tradition through its alive and ambitious development.« - FAZ

Travel was always a part of our life, of our musical adventure; it accompanies us for many years and there's no doubt it'll stay that way. It's a gate that lets us enter the fantasy gardens of unknown cultures and human peronalities.

Opening up to another man, his traditions and history, is one of our main philosophies. It lets us discover uncharted worlds and allows a deep self-reflection.

Kroke is a traveler who for 25 years not only enjoys excursions but also learns a lesson from them and strives to share it with others.

So, welcome to the travel around quarter century's experience of Kroke's musical space through listening to our new 'Traveler' album.

Veranstaltungsort: Harmonie Bonn
Entry: 15:00 o'clock | Start: 16:00 o'clock

Evelyn Huber – Harp
Matthias Frey – Piano
Christopher Herrmann – Cello
Ramesh Shotham – Perkussion

Inspire – music that sets your imagination running wild! Four acoustic instruments – four musicians who inspire each other with their unconventional way of playing. Visions of chamber music – powerfully subtle. “Inspire” is title of the new CD by Evelyn Huber and certainly inspiring are the twelve tracks on the album.

The world musician Evelyn Huber, who has already received the Bavarian Culture Prize as well as the Echo Prize twice while with “Quadro Nuevo”, has found time despite her busy concert schedule to go solo with herextraordinary instrument. This path has been special, unusual and surprising. Huber created a new sound image for “Inspire” with her instrument the harp in the harmonic center point.

L’Hommage à Cesaria

Telekom Forum

feat.: Nancy Vieira, Teofilo Chantre, Lura, Dino D'Santiago, Lucibela, Elida Almeida et le Cesaria Evora Orchestra

Powered by:

Entry: 19:00 o'clock | Start: 20:00 o'clock

Cesária Evora has charmed the world with her music. She is one of the ambassadors who have brought the “world music” to life with her voice. Her songs, which told of deportation, melancholy, longing and homesickness, opened many people’s eyes to the culture of Africa. She thus became a strong ambassador across many borders. From the bars of Mindelo, the cultural capital of Cape Verde, to the big international stages, the UN ambassador Cesária Evora has given the musical riches of mornas and coladeiras to the world. The orchestra of Cesária is made up of musicians who have accompanied her throughout their lives and who have helped shape this very distinct music.

Although Cesária rose to the music heaven in 2011, Cesária’s voice has not stopped ringing in our hearts. This evening’s interpreters are the most important musicians of Cape Verde. In addition to Cize’s sheer inexhaustible repertoire, they will also be presenting the songs dedicated to Cesária. The Saudade cult, the groove of the Coladeiras, the blues of the Mornas are revived back from nostalgia by the longtime companion and composer of many Cesária pieces, master of the ceremonies Teofi lo Chantre. The great singers Elida Almeida, Nancy Vieira, Lura and Lucibela Freitas are among the greatest interpreters in this genre. Special guest is Dino Santiago, best remembered from the fi rst Festival in 2016.

QUERBEAT, DICHT & ERGREIFEND & MEUTE

Location: Telekom Forum
Entry: 18:00 o'clock | Start: 19:00 o'clock

Querbeat, the local matador, loud, shrill and flashy! Singing in the Cologne dialect, this band from Bonn has trumpeted its way to the hearts of their fans. QUERBEAT brings the genuinely fun music of the Rhineland. Dicht & Ergreifend – Steam of the Giants Live 2017 dicht & ergreifend (dense & poignant) can be described with the oxymoron “Ghetto-Gstanz’l” At home in Berlin-Friedrichshain, born and raised in Lower Bavarian idyll – a highly explosive combination. Racism and Alcohol are the common themes. Including samples by Beenie Man, Haftbefehl und dem ewigen Stenz, Monaco Franze.

With the mixture of hypnotic techno and expressive brass music, the self-proclaimed techno marching band Meute has quickly become famous in the European music scene. The lovingly crafted interpretation of electronic music creates a wild and extravagant beauty that is not only meant for a spontaneous street rave. Particularly on the big stages with thick sound and electrifying lightshow, a unique elemental force develops and spreads to everyone present within seconds. One thing is for sure: If at some point in the world the power supply becomes too short, MEUTE will still throw a techno party and dance with the crowd around the fire.

Participating in this project are Ballaké Sissoko from Mali, a master of the kora, Driss El Maloumi from Morocco, a virtuoso on the oud and Rajery from Madagascar on the valiha. With only three stringed instruments, the three musicians weave a dense sound carpet that still has a lot of lightness. It is above all the sound of the ensemble that is so thrilling. The three instruments produce such diversity of sound, making the music very light, tender and dreamy. The three ancient instruments are able to do this without any modern electronic gadgets. As a special guest, we are happy to welcome the Indian star virtuoso Debashish Bhattacharya to this double concert at the Beethovenhaus.

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

about the Over the Border Festival

Music touches every corner of the world and with music there are people. Over the Border Festival presents the worlds musicians and their messages to you in Bonn, This collection of musicians act as a plea of the people struggling to protect natural resources and their own livelihood's. Many people around the world are forced to leave their homes and migrate looking for a better future anywhere else due to environmental challenges.

Most of these challenges are directly related to desertification and climate change which constantly diminish their resources and render their livelihood useless. The power of music brings people together and will spread the voices of the most vulnerable populations of the world.
